Central Asia Project

The "Emerging Market Economies in Central Asia" research project focuses on the Central Asian countries of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan. The wealth of crude oil and gas in this region is attracting global interest. However, little attention has been paid to the economic and political situations of these countries up to now.

Research work in this project will therefore particularly concentrate on institutional reforms that will be made on the path to a market-based system.

In cooperation with the University of Groningen and the VolkswagenStiftung, an international conference on this topic entitled "Institutions, Institutional Change, and Economic Performance in Central Asia" took place at the PFH Göttingen on 25 and 26 September 2008.
