Which university is right for me?

Many international students choose Germany as their study abroad destination, making it one of the most popular choices across the globe. But, when it comes to choosing which university type to study in Germany, there are multiple things to take into consideration. The most important one is, knowing what subjects interest you or what career you have in mind. Today’s topic is how to choose the right university for your studies in Germany.

The different university types in Germany

Whether you are a domestic or an international student, it is important to know the different university types Germany offers: universities, universities of applied sciences, colleges of art and music, and universities of cooperative education. Each type has a certain area of specialisation.

University

Theoretical instruction and research are highly valued at German universities. They typically provide a wide variety of courses, including specialised ones like technical universities or education that focus primarily on pedagogy. Universities may also specialise in a single field of study, like sports or medicine.

University of applied sciences

Universities of applied sciences, on the other hand, take a more practical approach to education. Students still learn theory but the focus is stronger on providing hands-on experience. This type of university offers a wide range of academic specialisations, including business, marketing, design, and studies relating to technology.

Colleges of art and music

Colleges of art and music are where students study music, architecture, design, and fine arts. Unlike any of the previous types, admission here requires having a special talent, which applicants must demonstrate in an entrance exam. Additionally, only a small number of students are accepted by these colleges each year.

University of cooperative education

These universities are educational institutions that solely provide dual study programmes. These programmes combine academic work with vocational training or company internships. For those who want to jumpstart their careers and learn things the practical way, this could be an intriguing choice.
